Trim, doors, decks, stairs and rot repair for houses around Canaan and the surrounding Upper Valley towns.

Plenty of my work is remodels and new construction, but most carpentry calls are not. They are the things a New Hampshire house does to itself over twenty winters — a door that will not latch until you lean on it, a deck board that flexes underfoot, trim that has pulled away from a wall, a sill that has gone soft where water has been running off the roofline for years.
That is the work I do. Repair and replacement carpentry, done by one person who shows up when he says he will, tells you what the job actually needs, and cleans up before leaving.
Two things drive most of the carpentry work in this part of New Hampshire: water and frost. Water gets in behind trim, under thresholds and along the bottom of exterior door jambs, and it works quietly for years before anything looks wrong. Frost moves posts, piers and stair stringers, which is why a set of deck stairs that was fine in October is suddenly out of level in April.
When I look at a repair I try to find the reason, not just the damage. Replacing a rotted corner board without dealing with the gutter dumping on it means doing the same repair again in three years. If the cause is outside what I do, I will tell you that too.
You call or text, describe the problem, and send a photo if you have one. For most repairs a photo and a few questions are enough for me to give you a realistic range over the phone. If it needs eyes on it, I come look and give you a free estimate before anything starts.
I work on one job at a time rather than starting five and rotating between them, and materials get matched to what is already on the house as closely as the lumberyard allows — old trim profiles and true-dimension stock in older houses take some hunting, and I would rather spend that time than leave a patch that announces itself.
The Work
One room, start to finish: insulation up, pine boards on, all the way to the peak. Tap any photo to see it full size.
Questions
Small jobs are welcome — one door, one section of trim, one soft deck board. If you have several small things, save them up and we can knock the list out in a single visit, which is cheaper for you than three separate trips.
Usually. Stock profiles cover a lot of it, and where they do not, trim can be built up from several pieces to match an old profile closely. I will show you the match before it goes on the wall.
Yes. Remodels, additions, garages, new decks and new construction are their own service — see remodels and construction.
